You guys might also have this question so I’m posting it here with a good answer too. It comes from ‘Lunch in a Bag’ who asks:
In around May my dad took my Xbox away (not telling why) and returned it in June. It worked fine aside from three games- Modern Warfare 2, AC: Brotherhood, and Black Ops. I’m not too concerned about Brotherhood and MW2 but I’m a little frustrated with Black Ops. When I got it back, Black Ops would run up to the end of the Activision-Treyarch screen, then it would freeze. I tried cleaning it with my disc skip fixer but no luck. So I tried again tonight and now it tries to read the disc for about a minute and a half, then it says “Unrecognized Disc”, implying it’s like a Wii or PS3 game. There are a few scratches on the disc but they were there when the games were taken away. I’ve tried cleaning out the disc drive and the disc itself. I really don’t know what could have happened because the Xbox and games just sat there in a garbage bag (inside the house) for a month and a half. I’ve tried clearing the system cache too. I’m really mad because all the other games work aside from the three I mentioned and I want to know if there’s anything I can do to fix the disc, or if I’ll have to buy a new one.(Please don’t give answers like, “TL;DR” or “Get PS3″ or “Get Battlefield Bad Company”. They don’t help at all.)
Answer: Check if the disc has a “ring-like” scratch around the outer edge. If it does, and you can’t get at least as far as into the menu of the game so that you can Download it into your hard-drive, you’re stuck. Contact Activision and let them know about the scratch and they’ll offer to send you a new one for $20.
